Ingredient notes
- Pizzelle cookies: I used chocolate Pizzelles, but you can also use plain if you don't mind the underside of your witch hat being a bit lighter in color.
- Chocolate chips: any kind will work, just use your favorite! I used dark chocolate chips.
- Ice cream: I used chocolate for the bottom scoop, and pistachio for the witch face. If you want the witch face to be green, make sure the pistachio ice cream you buy is green, because some are white. You could also try lime sherbet or mint chocolate chip for green. Or use your favorite flavors!
- Assorted candies/nuts: you can use any types of candies and/or nuts you want to make the witch face. I used pistachios for the noses, pieces of thin black licorice for the eyebrows and hair, a mini m&m for the mouth, and these candy googly eyes (affiliate link).
Step by step photos
1. To begin making the witch hats, first place your hand inside the hole of the ice cream cone. With the other hand, paint the cone with a thin layer of melted chocolate, leaving the very tip unpainted. Make sure to paint the underside edge of the cone too! (Alternatively, you can paint the Pizzelle first before placing the cone on top.)
2. Place the cone in the middle of the Pizzelle. Paint a layer of chocolate on the top and outside edge of the Pizzelle. Make sure to fill in the entire gap between the cone and Pizzelle with a generous amount of chocolate to make sure the joint is well-sealed. (And don't forget to paint the tip too!)
3. Let the chocolate on the cones set, either at room temperature or in the fridge.
4. Once the chocolate has set, you can make the sundaes! Use whatever ice cream is your favorite, or you can go with my "chocolate body, green pistachio face" theme. And, you can make the faces with whatever candy and/or nuts you have on hand.
Tips and tricks
- First of all, please make sure the chocolate isn't too hot before starting to make the witch hats! You may get a little on your fingers as you paint the cones.
- I like to make the hats on parchment paper, this cuts down on mess and prevents the chocolate from sticking to the surface as it dries.
- You can let the witch hats set either at room temperature or, if you want to speed up the process, put them in the fridge. Depending on how thick you paint the chocolate, this will take about 90 minutes at room temperature or 30 minutes in the fridge.
- If you are planning on placing the hats into the fridge to set, put the piece of parchment paper you are working with on top of a small tray before placing the wet hats on, that way you can easily move the tray into the fridge without disturbing the wet chocolate.
Recipe FAQs
You can definitely make these chocolate witch hats a few days ahead! I made some 4 days ago and they are still looking good. Just make sure the chocolate is entirely set up before storing them.
Once the witch hats are totally set, then gently place them inside a sealed plastic zip top bag or a plastic or glass container with a tight fitting lid. Don't pack too many in the same bag or container however. The Pizzelles may start to chip around the edges if they are packed in too tightly.
Of course googly eyes are cute, but not necessary at all if you want to make these Halloween sundaes. You can use anything you have around the house; mini m&ms, mini chocolate chips, nuts, or even raisins! The most important thing of course is just to have fun with it (and getting to eat a delicious sundae of course!).

Halloween Ice Cream Sundaes
Make these adorable Halloween Ice Cream Sundaes from a few basic ingredients. Have a blast creating funny witch faces with your favorite Halloween candies!
- Prep Time: 10 minutes
- Total Time: 40 minutes
- Yield: 2 sundaes 1x
- Category: dessert
- Method: no bake
- Cuisine: American
Ingredients
- ½ cup chocolate chips
- 2 sugar ice cream cones
- 2 chocolate or plain Pizzelle cookies
- pistachio ice cream (or your favorite green colored ice cream)
- chocolate ice cream
- assorted candies and/or nuts (candy googly eyes, licorice laces, m & ms, etc.)
Instructions
- Place the chocolate in a small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 15 seconds, stir, and microwave again for an additional 15 seconds. Continue to microwave in 15 second increments, stirring in between, until chocolate is melted. Before moving on to step 2, make sure the chocolate is cool enough to touch (it's likely some chocolate may get on your fingers!).
- Use a pastry brush to paint the first ice cream cone with melted chocolate, but leave the very tip of the cone unpainted.
- Paint the edge of the ice cream cone with chocolate and, using the unpainted tip as a handle, place the cone in the middle of a Pizzelle.
- Paint the top and outside edge of the Pizzelle with chocolate, making sure to add a generous amount of melted chocolate to the seam edge between the Pizzelle and cone to seal the joint between the two. Paint the tip of the ice cream cone.
- Repeat this process with the second cone and Pizzelle.
- Allow the chocolate on the hats to fully set, either at room temperature or fridge. This should take around 90 minutes at room temperature or 30 minutes in the fridge.
- When you are ready to serve the sundaes, add a scoop of chocolate ice cream to the bottom of a sundae glass or narrow mug. Add a scoop of pistachio on top. Decorate the scoop of pistachio with assorted candies and/or nuts to make a face. Top the sundae with the chocolate witch hat and serve immediately.
Notes
I like to place the wet chocolate hats on a piece of parchment paper, this helps keep the hats from sticking to the surface while they are setting. You could also use a piece of wax paper or a silicone baking mat.
If you want to place the hats into the fridge to set, place the parchment paper on a small tray before adding the hats; this will allow you to move the hats easily into the fridge without disturbing the wet chocolate.
The witch hats can be made in advance and kept in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days.
The flavors of ice cream listed here are only a suggestion, feel free to use your own favorite flavors!
