This easy crock pot recipe combines tender chunks of ham and cabbage that are seasoned with apple, onion, garlic, and a touch of apple cider vinegar! So flavorful and filling, and with only 15 minutes prep!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 pounds (680 g) cooked ham
  • 1 1/2 pounds (680 g) green cabbage (about 1/2 medium head)
  • 1 medium apple
  • 1 medium onion
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 4 cups (946 ml) broth (any kind)
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper, or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon celery salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt, or to taste
  • 4 tablespoons butter (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep the produce: Remove the core and tough outer leaves from the cabbage, then cut the cabbage into large chunks (about 1 - 1 1/2 inches, or 2.5 - 3.4 cm, in size). Chop the apple and onion. Finely chop the garlic. Add the produce to the pot of a 6-quart (or larger) slow cooker.
  2. Cut the ham into bite-sized cubes and add them to the crock pot.
  3. Add the broth, apple cider vinegar, black pepper, celery salt, and salt to the crock pot. Stir the ingredients to combine. Gently press the ingredients down into the crock pot (ingredients won't be fully submerged in the broth).
  4. Dot the top of the cabbage and ham mixture with chunks of butter (optional).
  5. Cover the slow cooker and cook on high for 4 hours or low for 8 hours.
  6. Remove the lid and stir the cabbage and ham. Taste the cabbage and add more salt and/or black pepper if needed. Serve with a slotted spoon.

Notes

During the cook time, avoid lifting the lid, because this will slow down the cook time due to the escaping steam.
